I’m Becky Curry.
Now in my fifth year at Massey University, completing a Master of Science.
I didn’t come from a traditional farming background, but in 2020, I moved to Palmerston North to begin my studies. I pursued a Bachelor of Animal Science, majoring in Breeding and Genetics.
Working as a relief milker during my undergraduate years gave me valuable hands-on experience and sparked a deep interest in dairy genetics, inspiring me to pursue postgraduate studies where I could make a meaningful impact on animals, farmers, and the environment.
I began my Master’s in 2022, my thesis research compared the production performance of first-cross Norwegian Red dairy cows with traditional breeds in their first lactation. The Norwegian Red is known for improved health and fertility traits, so this research offers insights into the potential benefits and challenges of introducing this breed to the New Zealand dairy industry.
Now in the final stages of my thesis, I am also working in the dairy genetics industry, enjoying the chance to apply my practical and academic knowledge. Looking ahead, I want to work within the industry before starting my PHD .
The LIC Brian Aspin Memorial Scholarship has provided me with financial support and enabling on-farm research in Southland, along with attending a conference. I encourage other students to apply for scholarships, they open doors to new learning, research, and industry connections that can be invaluable for personal and professional growth.
