As with many people, growing up I had a variety of aspirations. One day I wanted to be a veterinarian, and another an architect. But when I started studying science in school, I knew that was where I would end up. Learning about life and the intricacies of biology lit a fire in me that drove me through my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry which I graduated with in 2024.

My interest in biochemical and genetic studies has allowed me to push myself to do further research. In 2025, I will complete an honours programme in the University of Otago Biochemistry department investigating how patient variants in the H4 genes are the cause of a novel neurodevelopmental disorder. Our Rare Disorder Genetics lab is investigating the functional basis of this disorder, and the work which I will contribute to is an important step towards improved healthcare and options for patients.

I am incredibly grateful to Livestock Improvement Corporation for the support they are providing me through the Pat Shannon Scholarship. University can present a significant financial barrier, and I can now continue my research without as much financial stress. I look forward to having more time to spend digging into my work and building my genetic career.
