Growing up, I have always had a passion for biology, and this interest has guided my pursuit to study in this field. In 2023, I graduated from the University of Waikato with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in molecular and cellular biology.

During my time at Waikato University, my interest in genetics was raised, and a highlight of my undergraduate degree was being able to complete an internship at Livestock Improvement Corporation, where I was able to apply my genetic learnings to real-world scenarios.

To further my education in the genetics/bioinformatics field, I have commenced a Master of Science with Massey University based at the Al Rae Centre in Hamilton. My project is centred on uncovering the genetic origins and makeup of the two primary New Zealand farm dog breeds, Huntaway and Heading Dogs. This research is part of a wider study that looks to improve the health and welfare of these breeds through genetic applications.

The Pat Shannon Scholarship has given me the opportunity to focus on producing high-quality research whilst alleviating some of the financial stress that can accompany student life. This support has enabled me to immerse myself in my studies and in doing so, build a strong foundation for a future career in the genetics industry.
