Top Tips to enhance the chance of publication

  • Your photo will ideally include a subject (person, animal, or plant) which will be in sharp focus.
  • Your photo does not necessarily need to be recently taken.
  • If your picture merely illustrates a landscape (i.e. no specific subject; for example, a sunset over rolling green pasture), it will need to be particularly striking to make publication.
  • Carefully word your caption to explain the context of the picture to the audience. Include names of people where possible.
  • Avoid pictures that could be construed as advertising a brand.
  • The best photos generally evoke a form of strong human emotion when viewed.
  • Think about colour, lighting, texture, and composition. Also consider angles and the location, or viewpoint (from where the picture is taken).
  • Generally, photos containing a subject will take up either one-third or two-thirds of the picture on either the left or right, with the space difference left open.
  • Be creative, but don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember, when it comes to theory in photography, rules are there to be broken, or at least challenged!
