LIC-marketed Charolais, supplied by Kakahu near Geraldine, continue to rise in popularity.

Charolais:

  • Charolais has seen the greatest increase in semen demand of any beef breed in LIC’s Beef Catalogue over the past three years. This is driven by buyer-demand for calves that will ‘rocket out of the gate’, and continue to put on weight.
  • LIC-supplied Charolais are among the most highly selected and genetically superior genetics available for calving ease, low birth weight, and short gestation length.
  • A distinct colour-marking, Charolais progeny are easily recognisable.
  • All LIC-marketed Charolais are homozygous polled.
  • Adds muscle and conformation to a dairy beef carcase.

For the past few years, LIC has used Kakahu Charolais genetics to pinpoint excellent calving ease, low birth weights, and shorter gestation lengths.

Liveweight gain is where the real magic begins: Charolais-sired calves grow fast, wean earlier than many other breeds, and have a reputation for hitting target liveweights and carcase weights.

Ultimately, they give dairy farmers a genuine opportunity to secure premium market prices.

LIC-supplied Charolais highlights:

Kakahu Gerry was the number one sire for growth to weaning, (400 days & 600 days), as well as carcase weight in the first seven cohorts of the Beef+Lamb NZ Genetics Dairy Beef Progeny Test (166 beef bulls tested).

Kakahu Milestone is from the same stud as previous standout sire Kakahu Gerry. Milestones’ within-breed EBVs exceed those of Gerry for traits of dairy importance, as well as growth and carcase weight.

Gerry’s first results from the B+LNZ Genetics Dairy Beef Progeny Test showed he ranked 12th (out of all 166 tested sires) in terms of the shortest time for his beef x dairy progeny to reach weaning weight.
