Longer recovery times means more calves

Cows that calve earlier have more time to recover, which increases their chances of getting back into calf. A longer recovery time can also:

reduce interventions
improve AB conception rates
lower empty rates
improve body condition.

Save on breeding costs

SGL semen is a cost-effective alternative to using natural mating bulls in weeks 7 to 10. It’s usually cheaper to use fresh or frozen SGL semen than it is to lease and feed natural mating bulls. Artificial breeding also reduces the safety risks associated with using live bulls.

Two types of SGL bull teams to meet your needs

Choose from two types of selectively bred SGL bull teams:

SGL beef and SGL Dairy – reduce gestation length by 9 to 12 days. You can’t keep the offspring as replacements or breed from them.
Compact Calving + BW – reduce gestation length by 4 days and keep the offspring as replacements.

Both types of team are available as No Choice packs. You get an even spread of every bull in the team.

It’s expressed in days. A negative number means a shorter-than-average gestation length.

Bulls pass on half their Gestation Length BV to their offspring, so if a bull’s BV is -20 his calves are likely to be born 10 days early.

You can’t keep the offspring from No Choice SGL Packs as replacements and you can’t breed from them.

We have three No Choice SGL Packs available:

Crossbred
Hereford
Angus.

Each pack is made up of teams solely of that selection.

All the bulls in the packs are selected for their SGL traits, rather than for their breeding worth. That includes the Crossbred bulls (different from the bulls in our KiwiCross teams).

The Crossbred and Hereford packs are available in both fresh and frozen semen.

Get the biggest reduction in gestation length from the Crossbred dairy packs. Beef packs make it easy to recognise offspring so you can cull them or raise them for meat.

Minimum order: 10 straws.

You will move up or down the InvestaMate scale each season depending on whether the 95% threshold was met in the previous season.

Straw purchases may comprise any combination of Premier Sires or Alpha straws. Premier Sires Fresh Sexed and Sire Proving Scheme inseminations contribute to the 95% threshold of (InvestaMate) qualifying purchases.

‘Qualifying’ animals are female animals born prior to 31 December 2021 in the ‘herd’ at the time of October charging. ‘Herd’ is defined as the ‘whole herd’ group in MINDA. The InvestaMate discount does not apply to Premier Sires Fresh Sexed or Sire Proving Scheme products (i.e. InvestaMate discounts only apply to Premier Sires Daughter Proven, Premier Sires Forward Pack, Premier Sires A2/A2, and Alpha products).
